Mt Barker – Laratinga Wetlands

I’ve decided to dedicate a page entirely to these wetlands because I was so impressed with them.  The walking paths around the waterways and the little nooks and crannies for bird watching are very well used.  This is a community area and there are people running, walking, bird watching, picnicing and exercising at all times of the day.  They arrive early in the morning, and some groups after work in the evening.  It is well serviced with barbecue tables and barbecues and conveniences.  I set up my computer on two different days and sat and worked and people watched – It is so relaxing.

The wetlands is entirely run on reclaimed water and there is heaps of birdlife. The walking paths are very well constructed and wheelchair access would be easy even on the unpaved paths.OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Langhorne Creek –Woodchester -Mt Barker – Hahndorf – Balhannah – Mannum – Caurnamont Reserve

I headed out of Langhorne Creek via the Mt Barker Road – through the district of Woodchester – lots of little by the way villages with only 200 odd people – wineries and wheat country.  Mt Barker is very historic, but I am focussed on spending most of the day in Hahndorf.  This is the German town in the Adelaide Hills – very quaint and historic as well. Remnants of Prussian history is everywhere – I had to sample the food and the beer (5.1% alcohol though), so I lunched at the Hahndorf Inn and had Kransky, Jagerbraten, Sauerkraut and German Potato Salad and the lager which was recommended.  The food was delicious, but the meal was huge so I have leftovers for dinner – not having to cook is a bonus.  The décor was great – I imagine that a beer house in Munich would have similar – the chairs were unusual – even dimples for where your bottom sat – very comfortable though.

The souvenir shop had an amazing array of Cuckoo Clocks – gorgeous sounds were emanating from them (Not as many as the Black Forest Cuckoo Clock centre at home but impressive none the less).  They had a wooden Christmas tree with Bavarian ornaments hanging on it – I’d have loved to have had room to cart it around Australia.  The marionette and kite shop was fascinating – All types of puppets and marionettes.  This shop is a paradise for a big kid like me.

After exploring Hahndorf on foot, I decided to drive around – it’s a typical Hills Village – so I headed off for Mannum – birthplace of the paddle steamer.  In 1853 the PS Mary Ann was launched at Noa-No landing – the first on the River Murray in South Australia.

The Visitor Centre at Mannum is the home of the PS Marion, one of the oldest woodburning passenger paddle steamers still operating.  She was built in 1900.  At the Mannum Dock Museum they have a magnificent photo display of the 1956 floods.

Leaving Mannum I followed the western side of the river all the way to Caurnamont – my campsite for the night is in the Reserve – right on the River Murray. Gorgeous views were afforded from the road – lookouts and turnouts were available for photo opportunities – red cliffs on the opposite banks of the Murray – the craggy cliffs – beautiful.

My drive today was so diverse – wineries, grazing country, granite outcrops, undulating hills, forestry, river frontage, and dry eucalypt forests – wow this is an amazing part of the world.
